About Us Malawi & Energy Renewable Energy Technologies Projects & Concepts Support Our Work JANUARY 2013: The first two Malawian “ENERGY KIOSKS” started operations on the 21st and 22nd of January. Bvumbwe Energy Kiosk started the first day with 28 rental customers, while in Dzenje 2 brave customers took the first step to better electricity. As expected, the socio-economic differences between the two sites and seasonal influences are showing during the initial stage, but the future only will provide valuable learning experience to the local management as well as project implementers. Our first pictures and observations can be found here... NEWS FROM RENAMA ‘S FIELD PROJECTS MAY 2012: Renew’N’Able Malawi & IRRI Scotland to implement new rural electrification pilot project in 2 communities in Southern Malawi, supported by the Scottish Government Malawi Development Fund 2012/13. JANUARY 2014: The Scottish Minister for External Affairs and International Development, Hon. Humza Yousaf, visited Bvumbwe Energy Kiosk in the context of his journeyto Malawi. As one of the few out of the over 90 projects supported by the Scottish Government in Malawi, the Energy Kiosk Supervisory Committee, Kiosk Managers and RENAMA staff were honoured to receive the convoi consisting of the Minister, his special advisor and representatives of the Malawian Foreign Affairs Ministry. Find a video blog of the Minister’s visit here. FEBRUARY 2014: The first phase of field research on biochar as a means of improved efficient biomass energy usage and soil conservation and field test of a locally built pyrolisis stove, undertaken by our research student Sebastian Julmi from Rottenburg University of Applied Forest Sciences in Germany in cooperation with RENAMA and Bvumbwe Agricultural Research Station, is coming to an end. In a field test using mixed block design, Sebastian compared growth of tomato plants under different conditions (fertilizer, fertilizer & chardust, compost & biochar) to analyze impacts of the charcoal on nutrient availability, Using a pyrolysis stove, biomass can be transformed into charcoal during the first cookign process, which can either be used for a second cooking process or used as a long-term CO2 binding agent and soil enhacer to reduce dependency on fertilizers. More soon.
